Apple Ideas, Traditions and Superstitions
A Halloween tradition of bobbing for apples could
have began as a harvest ritual to honor Pomona,
the Roman goddess of fruit trees. A fun thing to do
is to label each apple with a name, before bobbing.
The apple you bite into is purportedly your future
mate.
One winter tradition, Wassailing is when participants
dash and apple tree with cider and sing carols. This
was intended to drive away evil spirits and to ensure
a fruitful harvest.
If you believe apples are for eating, not playing, you
may still come across plenty of superstitions. Try
this one: If you peel an apple in one long strip, make
a wish and it will supposedly come true. Before you
throw away your peel, toss it over your left shoulder,
it will form the first letter of your future mate.
There is some wisdom behind the old adage, “an
apple a day keeps the doctor away.” The apple is a
fat free snack that has been known to prevent colon
and lung cancer. If you can’t brush your teeth after
a meal, eat an apple–it can remove up to 95% of
the plaque that causes tooth decay.
